She can mix prints like no other celebrity and she is known for her bold risk taking outfits. Whether she is mixing florals, polka dots, or a checkered pattern Gwen always knows how to make the look seem organic.

Both of the looks above demonstrate how you don’t have to play by traditional fashion rules to make a statement. Although Gwen does make it look easy but that does not mean that you cannot accomplish the same look in your own style. The Ultimate in Vintage

70’s style is coming back with a vengeance with bell bottom jeans and high waisted straight skirts being seen all over the street and in store windows, especially with spring finally coming around. With his bell bottom jeans, felt hats, and constant use of floral scarves, Jimi Hendrix (although seen as one of the most influential electric guitarists of the 20th century) is the perfect style icon to discuss with the coming blooms that will happen after the April showers in Paris.

A good addition to any wardrobe is the bell bottom jeans. They are perfect to wear with a  heel to give a hippie idea to an outfit but also to keep it relatively in trend. A great example of this trend is Karlie Kloss, who added the bell bottom to her repertoire as an off duty model look.

If you’ve been in Paris, or New York City for that matter, in the last couple of months, you will notice an abundance of women wearing felt hats as part of their outfits, and Jimi wore hats that are very similar to these quite often while preforming. Cut it out or Cut it Off

It’s not fringe, but it’s also not quite as clean cut as you might normally be used to, and since the weather is starting to warm up, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk a little about cutoffs. Cutoffs, like most fashion styles, aren’t exclusively country, but they’re worn by many female country singers, and mentioned in several country songs. Pictured below is Carrie Underwood in denim cutoffs with over-the-knee boots, but if this look isn’t for you, feel free to keep the cutoffs and change out the shoes!

For shoes, the over the knee boots add an element of mystery. They’re country without being too country, and also flirty and fun. But if sandals are more your speed in the hot and sultry summer, opt for those and I promise your outfit will not fall apart. Virtually, any shoe will do.

Confused about what to wear on top? This is almost just as easy as the shoes. White loose fitting shirts can be an easy go-to, as well as light colored button downs like the one pictured above. “Watch n Learn” from Rihanna

Rihanna is a style icon who has been around for over ten years. She had us at “Pon de Replay” and it does not take much “Work” for her to look so effortlessly chic. Her style has evolved rapidly from mini skirts and hoop earrings to being a muse to many designers. The look that we will be discussing is the outfit she wore to the Adam Selman Spring/Summer 2015 show. The dress she is wearing is not her average style but I like it even more than her more predictable crop tops or slip dresses.

The pearls and lace up shoes add a fun and playful attribute to her fashion forward look. But this shape is not new but rather updated as Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized this dress decades ago with a more traditional look.

Slide-2[1]As you can see the sleeves add a more conservative aspect but it paved the way for how other designers today are crafting this classic style. But if you are anything like me you may be wondering how you can incorporate this into your everyday look without paying the hefty price tag that Rihanna’s dress surely would come with and carry on YSL’s legacy? I found some great dresses that anyone can purchase today.

trapezeThis Astr dress carried by Nordstrom can be dressed up or down very easily and is a steal at a mere $66.00. The shape is very flattering and it also comes in red and navy in addition to the pictured black one. Throw on some heels and you can wear it to an upcoming spring or summer wedding or pair it with a cardigan and flats for a more day to day look.

They are extremely stunning and can be worn with dress as modeled by Rihanna or you can dress them down with some jeans. the Impera laser cut leather is sure to be the envy of everyone around you at over 1,000 dollars.

On the Fence about Fringe?

Rather than drawing inspiration from a country singer in particular, this week I’m going to draw from the country music stereotype as a whole and show how you can emulate the entire genre just by one simple article of clothing. The article in question? A fringe vest.

The image below seems to perfectly capture the essence of the country music genre in one piece. The cowboy hat obviously adds to the perception, however, even without it, the fringe vest is more often than not classified as country. In the picture, though the “vest” is more of a jacket, the fringe on the sleeves is the most important aspect and the runner up most important aspect is the suede material.

Maybe there’s something about the jacket that makes the look a little more masculine, but by taking away the sleeves, the fringe vest is a perfect accessory for any girl looking for a little country inspiration. The suede material adds another aspect to the outfit along with the fringe. Without these two components, the vest just wouldn’t work. Just the one piece can make any outfit a little more exciting than it was before.

You can easily through it on over a plain white long sleeved tee with dark wash jeans or for something even more exciting, you can wear a fun suede skirt to match like this look:

From Lil J to Rock Princess

Most people I know associate Taylor Momsen with her character on Gossip Gril, Jenny Humphry, however, since then she has become the lead singer of the band, The Pretty Reckless.

She takes her style inspiration from many of the rockers already talked about here: Kiss’s leather, Kurt Cobain’s plaid shirts, and even preforming in a variety of band T shirts. Taylor is not shy of going with the tough guy look or even throwing some goth pieces into her looks like platform boots. All of these things combined lead to Taylor having a signature look, however the most signature part of her look is her heavily made up eyes.

What I like so much about her style, as she says herself is that she dresses for herself and she mixes and matches.

Taylor even recently starred in an ad campaign for John Gallanio that showcases her signature style to be the face of Parlez-Moi D’Amour Fragrance. Galliano uses her signature style to create the story around his fragrance.

“One Less Problem” Getting Ready

Ariana Grande. What is the first thing that comes to mind? Perhaps a half up half down hairstyle or a short skirt with knee high boots. Most likely the first thing is based on her style of clothing or hair because Ariana is steam rolling her way through the music industry and making an impression on the fashion world. The street style look that we will be focusing on today of Ariana wearing an all-black ensemble. I am not sure if Ariana’s coat is real or not (let’s hope it is faux for the animal’s sake) but this look is easy to put together and appears quite polished and put together. The coat I found for you is a steal so I would not hesitate to purchase this from Forever21 and gain your coat to achieve this look.

Rocker and Fashion Icon

The late David Bowie was undoubtably one of the most influential people of the late twentieth and early twenty first century not only in music, but in fashion and popular culture. In addition to his fashion, his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust has inspired various runway looks, and even other musicians such as Lady Gaga.

Jean Paul Gaultier used Ziggy Stardust as explicit inspiration for one of the looks in his Spring 2013 ready to wear collection. This look only only features a one armed one legged patterned jumpsuit and the look is even toped with the iconic bright orange mullet with blue eyeshadow.

Another runway that was graced by Ziggy inspiration is the Balmain Fall 2011 ready to wear line. This is a crystal encrusted jumpsuit reminiscent of many of Bowie’s jumpsuits, but what really shows the Bowie inspiration is the zigzags tat are reminiscent of Bowies famous lightning bolt.

Givenchy also took direct inspiration from Bowie with this jacket in its spring 2010 ready to wear runway with a black outfit topped with a black and white stripped jacket with a large triangular collar and padded shoulders.

Even Miu Miu’s fall 2012 show took inspiration from Bowie. The suit and tie (and blue eyeshadow!) are extremely close to the suit and tie that he wore in the “Life on Mars” music video, except it is on a woman. Bowie also has a hand in this because of his androgyny that he introduced to the world

“Love(ing) Myself” in This

Hey there! This week I am going to discuss an emerging style icon who recently debuted on the music scene;  Hailee Steinfeld. This girl has a very distinct look that is inspiring others on a global scale after her hit “Love Myself”.  The following look is great for a day to night transition for those times where either you cant go back to change or you just love the outfit that much you want to wear it all day. The collared shirt under the pullover sweater makes for an easily polished look. To make it a summery look, one can follow her lead on the nautical shorts or the black shorts that Taylor is wearing. to finish off the outfit, Hailee wisely choose a pair of simple flats to not over complicate the otherwise understated look that can easily be over powered. Blue Jean Baby

Looking for an up-and-coming trend? While it used to be popular, denim on denim is making a comeback, and while it’s not just in the genre of country music, many of these artists are sporting the denim on denim look. Pictured below is Luke Bryan wearing light wash blue jeans and an even lighter wash blue denim shirt. Singer Jason Aldean also often sports this look and country artist Scotty McCreery has a popular song called “Blue Jean Baby.”

Blue jeans seem to be a common subject of interest in many country songs today, and while the three country singers I mentioned are all males, the denim on denim look is not just for guys.

For girls to copy this look it’s easy! Simply find a pair of jeans that aren’t too dark. On top wear a solid darker colored tank top or t-shirt and then over that find a jean jacket that is just a shade or two lighter than the jeans you chose to wear. This outfit is great for spring and summer as the temperatures are warming up and you’re looking for something a little lighter than the winter parka you’ve been wearing for the last 4 months. This light wash vintage jacket is perfect for the look.

And when the temperatures reach an all-time high and even the jeans and the denim jacket are a little too much warmth for you, opt for a pair of denim cut offs, and denim button down shirt like one of these. All washes welcome!
